Calendar View Day and Week Views

Hi,

I think that the current implementation of Calendar View is great. However, I struggle to legitimately time block tasks on a daily basis in GoodTask. So I was wondering if there were any plans to add a calendar day view and a calendar week view?

I posted a while back about Now View and some potential changes to Now view to make scheduling tasks easier. But the way I see it, Now view is a replacement for a Day Calendar view, and a calendar view would work just as well, if not better. Especially if the tasks were draggable and able to be reordered in the view. Much like apps like TickTick do.

There is no shortage of ways of viewing tasks on any given day. In fact, in the place of a simple Calendar Day view, GoodTask has:

  1. A Day view for lists
  2. A Today Page
  3. Next View
  4. Calendar View popup

There are so many different ways, I think it is confusing to even know where to start, and how all of the different views are supposed to be used to effectively plan.

And so I still struggle to effectively time block and schedule tasks in a flexible manner. By time blocking, I am referring to reviewing and ordering tasks for a given day into a time based list, ideally on a calendar view.

  1. I can Duplicate a Task as an Event in Apple Calendars but if plans change and I drag that event to a later time or day to reflect new plans, this is not reflected in GoodTask.
  2. Tasks can not be dragged around in the Now View.
  3. I can change start times and Due Date times through editing tasks, but this is relatively slow and clunky
  4. Trying to change times of daily recurring tasks leads to all recurring task times to change as well, which is awkward (I have tried using custom repeats but can't fingure out how to stop this from happening)
  5. Next view often brings up events in a list that are out of the order I want to complete them, which means leaving Next View and reordering tasks by dropping and dragging them around in list view. Which can lead to messed up dates and times and is slow and removes focus on tasks
  6. The Today Page does not necessarily bear any resemblance to actual tasks on a day (other tasks can be added to the page or removed in the Today Page, but they are not then added to that day's tasks in lists
  7. There is no way of accessing a timer to focus on tasks outside of Next view. It would help perhaps if it was possible via a context menu entry in Now View to select Focus or Next and that would pop up the Next View to allow for Focussed tasks
  8. Whatever I try, I cannot see events on a flexible, updating daily or weekly calendar view

Time blocking on a calendar has been show in peer reviewed papers to lead to greater intention to complete tasks.

I would be interested to know if you plan to make any future changes to Calendar view to address the above? And If I am missing something fundamental in terms of daily planning and scheduling/ time blocking tasks using the various views currently available.

As always, thank you so much for all you do on GoodTask. It is an incredible app, but I am finding the above issues harder and harder to deal with in terms of time blocking tasks.

Thanks for great feedback. I’ll check in detail with your previous feedback while updating the app.

About 4, the handling of recurring tasks is managed by recurrence rule. As you complete the task, next one is made by the rule. Because of that mechanism, adjusting the task will reflect on the next task that’s made.

If you want to keep the main setting for a task and adjust them on daily basis, I recommend using automation to build a new task every day with the specifics. This will keep the details and you can adjust current task on a daily basis. Templates can be used too.

Thanks!

Hi.

Thanks for the speedy reply and for the tip re point 4. I’ve set up an automation with a template to add the tasks in question. A very useful feature.

And thanks for considering all feedback. Very much appreciated.
