It seems that sorting lists under particular groups in the Mac client does not reflect on the iPhone app? The groups are there but the lists have to be sorted there as well. Isn’t this included in the preference sync between the Mac/iPhone app?

Normally lists should all be synced. Check inside 'Settings - iCloud Sync' and try 'Download' on the device if it's not synced.
