How to make the view look in this YouTube Video?

In this older YouTube video tutorial, the day view has these solid bars of color running next to events that indicate which calendar they belong to, and I think it works well: https://youtu.be/sX-kp3ZpaxY?si=iSYcSWUIyvGOSOUf&t=69

Is there a way to make the views look like this instead of with the colored circles that make the calendar events look more like tasks?

You can set it in Settings - Appearance - Icon: Hide.

Great, thanks for the reply. Follow up: is it possible to hide the calendar icons only, but leave the task icons so they can be checked?

No, if you hide them, it hides both. You need to right click and choose Complete or complete it from item detail pane.

You can change icons for each as you may have already found out. Thanks!
