Unwanted return to top of list

Hello
Is there any way to stop the return to the top of the current list when moving even briefly from another app or from the Home Screen. It’s rather off putting when trying to work through a list or through a whole year. Is there perhaps a “remember position” or similar setting that I haven’t discovered yet?
